Zendaya Starts a Twisted Tennis Love Triangle in the Challengers Movie Trailer

In tennis, the term “love” has no meaning, but in the forthcoming sports drama Challengers, starring Zendaya, Josh O’Connor from The Crown, and Mike Faist from West Side Story, the word seems to have a lot of significance.

Together with first-time screenwriter Justin Kuritzkes, Call Me By Your Name director Luca Guadagnino tells the tale of Tashi Donaldson (Zendaya), a once-promising tennis prodigy who meets two interesting guys while competing. They would be fellow professionals Art (Faist) and Patrick (O’Connor), whose dynamic is first energised and then complicated by the addition of Tashi to the equation. As an example, in the new video, which is set to Rihanna’s “S&M,” Patrick tells Art, “It’s nice to see you lit up about something—even if it’s my girlfriend.”

Tashi marries and works as Art’s coach after suffering an injury. There seems to have been a time leap, as indicated by Zendaya’s bob hairdo, and Art and Patrick are now obliged to compete against one another and deal with their former romance. Sounds chaotic? Guadagnino earlier told IndieWire that this was precisely what he had in mind. The three main characters in the movie are described by the director as “beautifully complex and really fucked-up people that I love very much,” adding that “it’s hyperkinetic.”

Beyond its cast and director, the movie has a distinguished pedigree that will debut in theatres during award season. Guadagnino, Zendaya, and Amy Pascal (Little Women, The Post) all serve as producers. Additionally, the project’s soundtrack was composed by the Oscar-winning Nine Inch Nails pair Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross (The Social Network, Guadagnino’s Bones and All).
