Vincius Jr., a Real Madrid player, was racially harassed during a La Liga game in Spain.

According to Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti, racial whistling was heard during the Brazilian forward Vincius Jr.’s team’s La Liga loss to Valencia at the Mestalla Stadium.

The game’s turning moment occurred in the second half when, during a pause in play, an agitated Vinicius Jr. called out a spectator for the claimed abuse before interacting with the spectators in the audience in question.

According to La Liga TV broadcasts, there was a message in the stadium requesting that spectators refrain from insulting the players or hurling things onto the field.

The event was detailed in the game’s official referee report.

Racist taunts: In the 73rd minute, a fan from the southern ‘Mario Kempes’ tribune turned and yelled ‘Monkey, monkey’ at Real Madrid CF player No. 20 Mr. Vinicius José De Oliveira Do Nascimiento. This triggered the racism protocol, alerting the pitch delegate to issue a corresponding warning over the loudspeaker. The game was stopped until the announcement was played over the stadium’s loudspeakers,” it says.

Vincius Jr. was dismissed from the game in the last moments after getting into a fight with Valencia player Hugo Duro.

After the game, Ancelotti spoke to Movistar Plus about the issue and said, “I don’t want to speak about football now… Something is wrong with this league when the whole crowd is yelling “monkey” at a player and the manager is forced to consider removing that player as a result.

Ancelotti advocated for referees to call off games in other incidents of racism in the league in a separate chat with media. “I’m very sad because La Liga is a league with big teams and a good atmosphere,” the Italian stated. We must get rid of this. We live in 2023; racism is unnecessary. The only option left to me is to end the game.

Vincius Jr. said on his personal Instagram account: “The prize that racists won was my expulsion! ‘This isn’t football, this is @LaLiga’”

After that, the Real Madrid player tweeted a lengthy message. “It was not the first time, nor the second, nor the third,” it said. “In La Liga, racism is commonplace. The opposition supports it, the competition does as well, and the Federation agrees. So sorry again. Racists now own the title that formerly belonged to Messi, Ronaldinho, Cristiano, and Ronaldo.A beautiful country that I like and that welcomed me consented to project the stereotype of a racist society to the rest of the globe. I’m sorry for the Spanish people who disagree, but Brazil now views Spain as a racist nation. And regrettably, I have no excuses for anything that occurs each week. I concur. But I’m powerful and I

Real Madrid mentioned Ancelotti on its official social media, but did not issue an instant comment after the game.

Shortly after the game ended, Valencia sent a statement on their website.

“Valencia CF wishes to publicly condemn any type of insult, attack, or downgrading in football,” it states. Although it was an isolated incident, insults directed at any player of the opposing team have no place in football and do not align with Valencia CF’s values and identity. “The club, in its dedication to the values of respect and sportsmanship, reaffirms publicly its position against physical and verbal violence in stadiums and regrets the events that occurred during the game of Matchday 35 of La Liga against Real Madrid. The club is looking into the incidents and will use the harshest penalties. Similar to that, Valencia CF demands the greatest respect for its supporters and denounces any offence.

Valencia dismissed Ancelotti’s assertion that the crowd was screaming “monkey,” despite other Real Madrid players—including goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois—claiming that monkey chants were directed towards Vinicius Jr. The message said, “Valencia CF can’t accept someone calling our supporters racist; we vehemently oppose Ancelotti’s words.

La Liga announced an inquiry into what happened at the Mestalla in a statement of their own.

“LaLiga wishes to inform that it has requested all the available images to investigate what happened in light of the incidents which took place during Valencia CF vs. Real Madrid CF in the Estadio de Mestalla,” it added. “LaLiga will also look into the pictures where racist slurs were allegedly directed at Vinicius Jr. outside of the Mestalla grounds.”

The La Liga statement underlined that Vincius Jr. had experienced racism on many occasions this season. In March, league officials told CNN that they lacked the authority to sanction racist taunts from supporters or teams. Instead, La Liga must report any instances of abuse to the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) or local prosecutors, who handle them as legal matters before issuing any disciplinary actions.

The league then listed nine distinct incidents from the previous two seasons that it had reported to the Competition Committee of RFEF, the State Commission against Violence, Racism, Xenophobia and Intolerance in Sport, the hate crimes prosecutors and the courts. The league’s statement concluded, “LaLiga has been proactive against all racist incidents against the Real Madrid CF player Vinicius Jr.”

Numerous well-known football figures pledged their support to Vincius Jr. Rio Ferdinand, a former defender for Manchester United and England, said on Instagram: “Bro you need protecting….who is protecting @vinijr in Spain?”How often do we need to see this young guy being treated like this s***? I see him in need of assistance, in suffering, and with disdain.and the government does little to assist him. People must unite to push the institutions in charge of our game to do more. Nobody deserves this, yet you’re letting it happen. This requires a coordinated strategy to avoid being brushed under the rug once again.

Rafael Leo, a Milan striker, tweeted in reaction to the event, “When will it end?”
