Tony Evans Leaves the Ministry, Citing Original Sin

Tony Evans, a best-selling author and longstanding pastor of a megachurch in Dallas, has revealed that he is taking a break back from his ministry because of an earlier transgression.
Evans made these remarks to his Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship congregation on June 9 and posted them on their website. “The foundation of our ministry has always been our commitment to the Word of God as the absolute supreme standard of truth to which we are to conform our lives,” Evans stated.

We must turn from our sin and mend our connection with God when we fall short of that norm. Years ago, I didn’t live up to that expectation. Therefore, I must hold myself to the same biblical standards of repentance and restoration that I have held others to.
The 74-year-old Evans did not specify what he did, but he said it was not illegal.
“Even though I haven’t broken any laws, I didn’t act with morality,” he said. “In view of this, I am resigning from my pastoral responsibilities and submitting to the elders’ established process of healing and restoration.”
Tony Evans is the founder of The Urban Alternative, a Christian Bible teaching ministry. He has led the congregation for over 40 years and hosts a radio programme called The Alternative with Tony Evans, which airs on hundreds of radio stations worldwide.
Evans made the news that he will be leaving his senior pastoral role at both of the congregation’s services on Sunday, according to an extra statement posted on the website of the mostly Black nondenominational church.
The second statement says, “After much prayer and numerous meetings with Dr. Evans and the church elders, this difficult decision was made.” The elder board has a duty to lead the church according to the Bible. Dr. Evans and the elders concur that it is the elders’ duty to hold each other accountable and uphold the church’s integrity when an elder or pastor deviates from the strict guidelines set out in Scripture.
The church’s elders and lead associate pastor of fellowship Bobby Gibson will provide more information on upcoming actions pertaining to temporary leadership, according to the second statement.
In his statement, Evans claimed that he had informed the church elders and his family about this development, and that they “have lovingly placed their arms of grace around me.”
Lois, Evans’s 49-year spouse, passed away in 2019. In December, the church announced his marriage to the former Carla Crummie, referring to her as “Mrs. Carla Evans.” He remarried in November.
Tony Evans, the first African American to have his name attached to a study Bible and a comprehensive commentary on the Bible, has urged people to take responsibility for their actions.
In 2021, he discussed how he “corrected” gospel artist Kirk Franklin in an interview with Religion News Service. Following their dispute, Franklin’s eldest son leaked an audio clip including profanity, for which Franklin later apologised.
Franklin “was both challenged and corrected for that,” according to Evans at the time. And it’s a component of the responsibility that each and every guy needs in life.
The pastor now announced to the group that he is going to be going through a time of “spiritual healing and recovery.”
“I will be a worshipper like you during this season,” he said. “I am so in love with you right now, and I am relying on God to lead me through this difficult time.”
