Toby Keith Shares Health Update Following Cancer Diagnosis at People’s Choice Country Awards: ‘You Just Have to Dig In’

Toby Keith, who earned the Country Icon award at the first People’s Choice Country Awards on Thursday night (Sept. 28), offered an update on his stomach cancer fight, which he was diagnosed with in 2021.

“I’ve travelled some dark corridors. On the red carpet, he told Extra, “Almighty’s riding shotgun.” “But, you know, I’m feeling pretty good.” You have both good and terrible days. It’s a little like riding a roller coaster. I’m doing much better than I was last year at this time.” To stay strong, the 60-year-old actress says, “Just my faith.” I’ve always ridden with a prayer in my heart. I’m OK as long as He’s with me. All you have to do is get started. “You have no choice.”

Keith’s stomach cancer diagnosis was announced in June 2022. “Last autumn, I was diagnosed with stomach cancer,” Keith said at the beginning of his tweet. “I’ve spent the last six months undergoing chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery.” Thus far, so good. “I need to take some time to breathe, recover, and relax.”

“I am looking forward to spending time with my family,” the musician continued. But I’ll meet the fans sooner rather than later. “I can hardly wait.”

Keith sang “Don’t Let the Old Man In,” which he penned for Clint Eastwood’s The Mule, at Thursday’s People’s Choice Country Awards, but the song had a more haunting vibe in light of the diagnosis. “And I knew all of my life/ That someday it would end/ Get up and go outside/ Don’t let the old man in,” he sings on the introspective tune.
