Air debuted on Prime Video on Friday (May 12), just over a month after it opened in theatres. The autobiographical sports drama starring Jason Bateman, Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Viola Davis, Chris Tucker, and relates the tale of how Nike courted Michael Jordan.
The film explains how Jordan’s endorsement contract revolutionised the game for players and for Nike in addition to describing Nike’s attempts to sign Jordan and develop the famous Air Jordan 1. The movie does a fantastic job of highlighting the role that Deloris Jordan, Jordan’s mother, played in landing the shoe contract that made her son the first millionaire athlete in history.
Affleck plays Nike co-founder Phil Knight in the Amazon Studios movie, which he also directed. While Tucker Howard White, vice president of Jordan Brand, plays Sonny Vaccaro, Bateman and Bateman portray former Nike executives Rob Strasser and Sonny Vaccaro.
Jordan expressly chose Davis to portray his mother. During the movie’s SXSW premiere, Affleck said, “He responded, “Well, it has to be Viola Davis.” “I said, ‘That’s like asking can I play basketball on your court, and you say, yeah, if you get Michael Jordan.’” The finest actor I’ve ever seen is Viola Davis.
The Academy Award-winning actress co-stars with her real-life husband, Julius Tennon, who portrays James R. Jordan, the late Jordan’s father. The cast is completed by Chris Messina, Marlon Wayans, Mathew Mayer, and Gustaf Skarsgrd.
Audiences will only get to see old footage of Jordan and brief glances of the actor who portrays him (Damian Delano Young) in Air, which charts the growth of Nike and the Air Jordan brand. “We felt a more interesting way to tell the story would be for him to exist in the ether of the movie,” Affleck said last month, according to The Hollywood Reporter. “Michael Jordan is so famous that I truly felt if we ever saw an actor playing [him] it would be hard to get the audience to suspend their disbelief, because, in my opinion, there’s no convincing anybody that someone who isn’t Michael Jordan is Michael Jordan.
