The Daily Sweat: Broncos defense vs. Chiefs attack may be a bloodbath

The Denver Broncos are 32nd in points allowed, 32nd in yards allowed, and give up an absurd seven yards per play.

And now, on the road and on a short week, the Broncos face Patrick Mahomes.

The Kansas City Chiefs offense must be pumped for Thursday night’s showdown. This year, and maybe in many years, they will face the NFL’s weakest defense. BetMGM has the Chiefs as 10.5-point favorites.

Sean Payton’s Broncos have had a disastrous start. Fans have begun to tune them out. A victory against the Chiefs would improve their spirits, but it would be the greatest surprise of the NFL season so far. The Broncos have now dropped 15 consecutive games versus the Chiefs. The Broncos’ last victory against the Chiefs came in Week 2 of the 2015 NFL season, when Peyton Manning was at quarterback. Strange outcomes happen all the time in the NFL, but the Broncos ending this run with this defense while traveling on short rest would be as strange as it gets. There will be a lot of survivor pools watching what occurs on Thursday night.

This game will put those who like putting large NFL underdogs to the test. Taking the ugliest teams on the board results in a lot of winning bets in the NFL. And the Chiefs have historically been a horrible bet against the spread, with oddsmakers inflating spreads because to their popularity among casual bettors since Mahomes took over as quarterback. Officially, the Broncos are favored by +10.5 points, but the Chiefs may score 50 points and everyone can find something else to do on Thursday night.

The MLB playoffs are still going on.

The Atlanta Braves won 104 games during the regular season, but their playoff run might be cut short. The Braves are on the verge of elimination after the Philadelphia Phillies won Game 3 of the NLDS on the strength of a strong third inning. If the Braves want to keep their season going, they must win two consecutive games against the Phillies. The Braves are -150 favorites again Thursday night. The victor advances to meet the Arizona Diamondbacks, who swept the Los Angeles Dodgers and wrecked many future wagers on the Dodgers.

There are two games in college football.

Because the NFL game may get out of hand, remember that West Virginia plays at Houston and SMU plays at East Carolina. West Virginia is a 3-point underdog on the road. SMU is an 11.5-point favorite on the road.

More hockey in the early season

Thursday’s NHL schedule includes seven games. The finest game is arguably the one between the Florida Panthers and the Minnesota Wild. On Thursday night, both clubs will play their first regular-season game. The Wild are -125 underdogs.

What is your best bet?

Since I’m not feeling the Broncos-Chiefs game, let’s move on to the greatest game of the day. As we witnessed with the Dodgers, some teams are unable to pull themselves out of a hole. And you’ll lose a lot of money if you bet on their doing it. The Phillies are hot and confident, and they have a huge home-field advantage. I see why the Braves are -150 favorites, but not at this juncture in the series. I’ll go with the Phillies at +125.
