Taylor Swift Releasing ‘Dear John’ as John Mayer Begs for Kindness

If they ever really left, many Taylor Swift supporters have returned to their anti-John Mayer phase with the release of Speak Now (Taylor’s Version).

In case you’re not up to speed on Taylor Swift’s discography—or are still cursing Jake Gyllenhaal’s name as you blast “All Too Well (10 Minute Version)”—it’s generally accepted that the Speak Now breakup ballad “Dear John” was written about the “Gravity” singer, who dated Swift from 2009 to 2010 when he was 31 years old and she was 19. At the time of their relationship, they were both 19 years old.

If the “All Too Well” song’s altered lyrics are to be believed, “You said if we were closer in age maybe everything would have been OK. Imagine their reaction if they were reminded of the chorus from “Dear John,” which drove Swifties flocking to Gyllenhaal’s Instagram comments section back in November 2021:

You won’t be surprised to find that Swift supporters are displeased with the post’s comments section, despite the fact that they are going against their idol’s desires. Taylor Swift also requested “kindness” and “gentleness” from her fanbase back in June, the same night that she sang “Dear John” as a surprise Eras Tour song in Minneapolis.

According to fan-recorded videos from the concert on June 24, Swift remarked, “I was hoping to ask you, that as we lead up to this album coming out, I would love for that kindness and that gentleness to extend onto our internet activities.” I’m trying to express that I’m releasing this album because I want to be able to own my music and I think any artist who wants to should be allowed to. That is the reason I’m releasing this album.

She went on, “I’m 33 years old, and aside from the songs I wrote and the memories we shared, I don’t care about anything that happened to me when I was 19.” So what I’m trying to say is that because I’m not releasing this album, you shouldn’t feel the need to defend me online against someone who claims I composed a song when I was 19 years old and around 14 million years ago.

So yet, neither celebrity has received what they requested. One person responded to his message by commenting, “It’s over for you, john mayonnaise—speak never,” while another flatly refused both artists’ pleas, saying, “We’re not gonna be kind.”
