Taps in Destiny 2 Keith David Will Replace Lance Reddick As Zavala

Since the unfortunate death of John Wick and The Wire actor Lance Reddick earlier this year, Destiny 2 fans have been wondering what would become of his legendary character, Commander Zavala. Bungie revealed today that legendary actor Keith David, well known for his roles in Halo and Mass Effect, will take over in 2024’s The Final Shape expansion.

“Lance’s iconic voice led us through some of the most intense moments in Destiny’s history, and his impact on our Guardians, our community, and Bungie as a whole will never be forgotten,” Bungie said on August 10. “Keith David, a prolific stage, television, film, and game actor, will take on the English language voice of Zavala in The Final Shape and beyond.” Separately, Lance’s current in-game lines will be preserved for the next release.”

David has featured in several films, including The Thing, Platoon, and Nope. He also has a lengthy history of voice acting in video games, most notably as the Arbiter in Halo 2 and Captain David Anderson in Mass Effect. “I am honoured to carry on Lance Reddick’s great work as Zavala.” Lance nailed the character’s feeling of honesty,” he remarked in a news statement. “I intend to carry on with that work.”

“One of the great qualities of Zavala that really attracts me is his integrity…and his sense of family,” David said. “And I thought Lance [Reddick] did an excellent job of capturing that.” And it is my aim to carry on with that effort and bring that level of honesty to the job.”

Reddick was well-liked in the Destiny 2 community not just as a wonderful performer, but also as a huge lover of the game. He was discovered to have been playing soon before his terrible death, and in the days that followed, people came to the sci-fi MMO’s primary social area to offer their condolences. Bungie has vowed that The Final Shape, in which David will make his first appearance as the new voice of Zavala, would be the climactic expansion campaign and raid fans have been waiting for as the live-service loot shooter ends off its first significant narrative arc, a culmination ten years in the works.
