The rampage began at 10:12 p.m., less than an hour before Walmart closed.

Chesapeake Police spokeswoman Leo Kosinski says investigators searched the business overnight for casualties or anybody hiding.

The Thanksgiving week atrocity is yet another mass shooting in a safe area, like schools, hospitals, or shops.

A 22-year-old student at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville reportedly opened fire on other classmates this month, killing three.

A 22-year-old murdered five people and wounded 19 at an LGBTQ nightclub in Colorado Springs last weekend.

According to the Gun Violence Archive, the US has seen over 600 mass shootings this year. A mass shooting is defined as at least four dead or wounded, not counting the gunman.

Surviving shooting shocks mother

Joetta Jeffery said her mother, Betsy Umphlett, texted her during the incident to tell her someone had opened fire.

Jeffery said, “I’m weeping and trembling.” “We had just chatted about Thanksgiving turkeys when I got this SMS.”

Jeffery said her mother is unharmed but shocked, and they’re reunited.

City authorities have encouraged residents to avoid the business during the inquiry.

Please give our first responders room, the city tweeted.

The Chesapeake Conference Center has a reunification centre. Only intimate family and emergency contacts should travel to the centre.

Walmart says it’s stunned by the incident at one of its locations.

“We’re praying for victims, the community, and our employees.” We’re cooperating with law enforcement and supporting our employees,” the firm added.

ATF’s Washington, DC, field office is aiding local police, the agency tweeted.
