‘SCTV’ comic and star Joe Flaherty passes away at age 82

A founding member of the cherished Canadian comedy series “SCTV,” comedian Joe Flaherty has away. He was eighty-two.
Tuesday, Flaherty’s daughter Gudrun said that her father passed away on Monday after a short illness.

Born in Pittsburgh, Flaherty worked at The Second City for seven years in Chicago before relocating north of the border to assist in establishing the theater’s Toronto branch.
He then starred in “SCTV,” a movie about a fake TV station called Second City Television that included a lot of goofs in front of and behind the cameras, with John Candy and Catherine O’Hara. Guy Caballero, the head of the network, and Count Floyd, the vampire-like TV personality, were two of Flaherty’s characters.
Martin Short, Eugene Levy, Dave Thomas, and Andrea Martin were among the other former cast members.
He wrote for “SCTV” and was awarded an Emmy in 1982 and 1983. He went on to work in television and movies for many years.
Through his notable roles as a heckling heckler in the 1996 film “Happy Gilmore” and as an archaic parent in the 1999–2000 television comedy “Freaks and Geeks,” he was exposed to subsequent generations.
“Oh my god. As a child, I idolized Joe,” comedian Adam Sandler stated on X. “Always made my brother and I chuckle. Guy Caballero, Count Floyd. Whatever he did.”
“As the border guard in Stripes, he was amazing. Having him heckle me on the golf course is so much fun. The kindest person you’ve ever met. remarkable comic talent. And a real sweetie. ideal combination. Many gratitude to Joe for all the goodness he offered us all, and much love to his kids.”
Flaherty remained closely connected to Toronto, having held the position of resident artist at Humber College.
His daughter said in the statement on Tuesday, “Dad was an extraordinary man, known for his boundless heart and an unwavering passion for movies from the ’40s and ’50s.” Cinema wasn’t just a pastime for him; it had a significant impact on his job, especially during his incredible tenure with ‘SCTV.’” Being a member of such a talented ensemble and being proud of the show’s success made him love every second he spent working on it.”
