On Thursday, Atletico Madrid defeated Real Madrid 4-2 in their derby, thanks to goals from Antoine Griezmann and Rodrigo Riquelme in extra time. Diego Simeone’s team was awarded a spot in the Copa del Rey quarterfinals.
Two weeks after the teams faced off in the Spanish Super Cup semifinals in Saudi Arabia, where Real Madrid prevailed 5-3, the rivals reconnected for a fiery match at the packed Metropolitano that was likewise settled by two extra-time goals, but this time in Atletico’s favor.
The 39th minute saw Atletico Madrid winger Samuel Lino open the score for the home team on a counterattack. He scored from close range after center back Antonio Rüdiger mishandled a clearance backwards, giving him the opportunity.
Just before the half, however, goalkeeper Jan Oblak paid it forward when he mishandled an attempt to punch a free kick away from Luka Modric and allowed the ball to into his own net.
Another mistake resulted in a goal in the 57th minute when midfielder Eduardo Camavinga sent a pass back to his own area, confusing Rudiger and goalie Andriy Lunin. Álvaro Morata then tapped the ball into an empty net.
When Morata squandered a clear opportunity from close range in the 82nd minute, Real launched a counterattack. Jude Bellingham’s cross was headed for an equalizer by Joselu, sending the game into extra time.
In the hundredth minute, Griezmann performed a masterful job of stealing the ball from Vinicius Junior on the halfway line, sprinting up the right channel and into the box to score. With a neat finish in the 119th minute, Riquelme sealed the victory.
The coach of Madrid, Diego Simeone, said, “It was an amazing goal, probably one of his best.” “We had a great game, and the guys gave it their all against a very excellent opponent. The contest was fantastic.”
Following the conclusion of regulation, Simeone and Vinícius got into a furious argument. The celebration Vinícius had following Joselu’s goal seems to have enraged the coach. Apparently, Vinícius also got into a fight at the Metropolitano with one of the ball boys.
Regarding Vinícius, Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti said, “It was a very competitive match, he was involved in many duels, and sometimes you are not able to keep your cool.” “I think it’s understandable.”
Prior to the match, Ancelotti’s Madrid had won 17 of their previous 21 games in all competitions, with 4 draws.

In the quarterfinal draw, Atletico will be drawn with Barcelona, Girona, Real Sociedad, Celta Vigo, Mallorca, Athletic Bilbao, and Sevilla.
