Unverified recordings of a South African rapper, 28, falling twice while playing onstage at a music event surfaced online, his family claimed on Sunday.
In a statement, the family of Costa Titch, also known as Constantinos Tsobanoglou, revealed that the artist had passed away but did not provide the cause of death or any more information.
“Tragically, death has come knocking at our door. robbing us of our cherished son, brother, and grandson,” the unsigned message on Costa Titch’s Instagram page stated. “Emergency responders and all those there in his final hours on earth,” the statement said, “are gratefully acknowledged.”
Social internet videos purported to show Costa Titch slouching forward while singing. In one, a stage audience member who cannot be named catches him and assists him in standing up, following which the rapper resumes performing. Yet a few seconds later, he seems to lose consciousness once again.
It was unable to independently verify the videos. On Saturday night, Costa Titch was slated to play at the Ultra Music Festival in Nasrec, a Johannesburg suburb. The rapper was described as “a fantastic rapper, dancer, composer, collaborator, and friend to the event” by festival organisers in a statement posted on Twitter. They did not disclose the circumstances of his death and were unavailable for comment on Sunday.
Online, admirers and other musicians expressed their shock and grief at the rapper’s passing. Costa Titch, RIP. Amazing talent taken too soon, said the American and South African artist Leslie Jonathan Mampe Jr., better known as Da L.E.S, on Twitter.
A copyright organisation that defends musicians in the nation, the Southern African Music Rights Organization, sent “heartfelt sympathies” to Costa Titch’s family.
In only a few weeks, there had already been two prominent deaths in South Africa’s thriving rap culture. AKA, also known as Kiernan Forbes, was shot and killed outside a restaurant in Durban, South Africa, last month. He was 35 years old. In 2021, AKA and Costa Titch together produced an album.
