Quentin Grimes and Tim Hardaway Jr. are traded by the Dallas Mavericks to the Detroit Pistons.

The goal of the Dallas Mavericks’ actions is to strengthen their backcourt. The franchise sent shooting guard Quentin Grimes to the Detroit Pistons in exchange for veteran Tim Hardaway Jr. and three second-round draft selections, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.
According to Wojnarowski, the Toronto Raptors will choose a player in 2025, and there will be two selections made in 2028.

Grimes replaces Hardaway, giving Dallas some budgetary leeway. It enables the club to provide Derrick Jones Jr. a sizable portion of the $12.9 million nontaxpayer midlevel exception, according to ESPN’s Tim MacMahon. GM Nico Harrison of the Mavericks has made re-signing Jones his top goal.
In 2021, Grimes signed a guaranteed $11.1 million, four-year deal with the New York Knicks. His current deal is about to expire, and he will make $4.2 million the next season. Before the season begins, he is qualified for a contract extension.
In 2021, Hardaway committed to a four-year, $75 million deal with the Mavericks that deferred in value. In 2024–2025, he will make $16.1 million with the Pistons. Next summer, he becomes an unrestricted free agent.
Grimes, 24, played for the Knicks and Pistons in the previous campaign. He was moved by New York to Detroit in February, along with Bojan Bogdanovic, who was acquired by the Knicks.
Grimes played in only six games for the Pistons before missing the rest of the year to heal from a bone bruise he had suffered in January that caused persistent muscular tightness.
Grimes participated in 51 games between the Knicks and Pistons during his third NBA season. He averaged 2.0 rebounds, 1.3 assists, and 7.0 points on 37.2% shooting.
During the latter portion of Dallas’ season and their push to the NBA Finals, Hardaway, 32, found himself out of the starting lineup. In 14 postseason games and 79 regular season games, he made appearances. In the regular season, he averaged 14.4 points on 40.2% shooting, 3.2 rebounds, 1.8 assists, and 1.4 points on 37.9% shooting. In the postseason, he averaged 4.4 points on 37.9% shooting and 1.8 rebounds.
