Postecoglou of Tottenham is off to a Premier League record start.

Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham Hotspur squad defeated Fulham 2-0 on Monday night, setting a new record for the most points gained by a manager in their first nine Premier League games (23) in the process.

The Spurs manager’s total exceeded the previous record of 22 points shared by Guus Hiddink and Mike Walker from their respective first nine games in charge of Chelsea (2008–09 season) and Norwich City (1992–93 season).

James Maddison and Son Heung-Min both scored goals at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to give Postecoglou’s squad a convincing win against Fulham and move them two points ahead of the leaders in the Premier League standings.

When asked whether he was pleased with his record-breaking accomplishment, Postecoglou said, “Look, everyone deserves credit.” Undoubtedly, the season is off to a tremendously positive start. In terms of performance, we’ve been really reliable.Tonight was a demanding worknight. We did a great job holding it during the first half. We had to exercise some patience in spotting opportunities, and I felt Fulham was quite well-organized, especially on defense.”

However, when Fulham wasted opportunities to tie the game, the Spurs manager was critical of his team’s performance in the second half.

“I thought our pressing was outstanding all game,” he said. “But with the ball it was probably the worst 45 minutes we’ve had all year.”We must be careful to maintain our methodical approach. Vic [Guglielmo Vicario] ultimately produced a few outstanding stops to preserve a clean sheet. We ought to have had much more control over the game in that situation.”

Notwithstanding Postecoglou’s annoyance, Spurs have led the Premier League for the longest period of time since December 15, 2020, when they took the lead after 12 games under José Mourinho.

Postecoglou departed Celtic in the summer to take over as manager of Spurs, and he is yet to experience a league loss with his new team.

When Tottenham was at its lowest point last season—after finishing in eighth place in the league and missing out on European football for the first time since 2009—the head coach of the Spurs brought fresh energy to the team.

Since they began the season with 11 consecutive victories and went on to win the league championship, Tottenham’s start to the season has been the greatest since 1960–61.

When the north London team plays Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Friday, they have the chance to go five points ahead at the top of the Premier League, having played one more game than their opponents.
