Miley Cyrus Reflects on Her Scrutinised Childhood on ‘Used to Be Young’

MILEY CYRUS is taking stock of her life in the limelight. On Friday, the singer released “Used to Be Young,” her first single since the release of her LP Endless Summer Vacation in March.

The frank song she published on Friday was motivated in part by the criticism she experienced. “I know I used to be crazy/I know I used to be fun/You say I used to be wild/I say I used to be young,” says Cyrus in the chorus. “You say time has changed me.” That’s all right; I’ve had a nice run.”

“This song is about honouring who we’ve been, loving who we are, and celebrating who we will become,” Cyrus said in a statement after the track’s release. When I think about my history, I feel proud, and when I think about my future, I feel hopeful. “I am grateful to my loyal fans who make my dreams a reality on a daily basis,” she said. I am grateful for the consistency of your unwavering support. This song is dedicated to you.”

“It’s super emotional because I am kind of a mini-me of my mom and I could see her inside of the camera by using a technology where I could livestream with my mom from inside the camera,” Miley added of the video, which featured the singer standing alone in the dark. So we could see one other, and as she danced, it made me weep, it made me laugh, it brought up so many genuine feelings, and I believe it’s really bringing people into pure emotion, which I don’t think we see very often these days.”

Cyrus has posted parts of her speaking about the song’s relevance to her journey over the previous three days. She said that the publication date, August 25, has “historically been important to me personally and to my career.” She reminisced on Hannah Montana’s farewell episode in an extract shared on YouTube earlier this week.

“Hannah is for the kids,” she says in the video. “Miley is for grown-ass men in high heels.”

The lyrics catch Cyrus thinking on the views she encountered as a celebrity youngster. She talked to British Vogue about the severe criticism she received when appearing on Hannah Montana and in her early career.

“I carried some guilt and shame around with me for years because of how much controversy and uproar I truly caused,” she said. “As an adult, I see how unfairly I was evaluated… Adults unfairly criticised me as a kid, and now that I am an adult, I see that I would never harshly condemn a child.”

Many of her career’s scandals occurred during her Bangerz album period, including her polarising naked video for “Wrecking Ball” and her Robin Thicke twerk session at the 2013 VMAs. (She also sat for a shot taken by acclaimed photographer Annie Leibovitz for the cover of Vanity Fair in 2008, when Cyrus was wrongly criticised by the public.)
