Mikey Williams leaves Memphis to pledge to UCF.

A few days after declaring his intention to leave Memphis, former top prospect Mikey Williams declared his commitment to UCF on Friday.

Williams announced the news on Instagram, writing, “All I needed was a chance.”

Williams was arrested last spring after being signed by Memphis in the 2023 class. The incident occurred on March 27 at his house, when a vehicle full of individuals who had left the property were reportedly shot at. In November, he entered a guilty plea to a lower felony charge of making criminal threats, while being charged with nine felonies overall. Williams agreed to a plea deal that allowed him to have the charge dropped to a misdemeanor provided he met certain conditions prior to his August sentencing.

Williams was absent from Memphis throughout the court proceedings, therefore he never participated in a game for the club.

“We can confirm Mikey Williams has chosen to enter the transfer portal,” Memphis stated in a statement Monday. “The University process for him to join the men’s basketball program was underway, but Williams elected to explore his options at this time.”

Early in his high school career, Williams—a 6-foot-2 guard with 3.6 million Instagram followers—was regarded as a five-star recruit due to his viral YouTube mixtapes and dunking videos that went viral.

Prior to traveling to Texas and Houston the following week, UCF (10-4) will visit BYU on Saturday after pulling off a stunning upset victory over No. 3 Kansas earlier this week.
