Liverpool wins the preseason opener thanks to a late Jota double.

Diogo Jota scored two stoppage-time goals to help Liverpool beat German second-tier side Karlsruher SC 4-2 in their first preseason game in Germany on Wednesday.

After trailing early in the second half, Jota, a half-time replacement, produced one piece of wonderful movement and two perfect strikes in the second and third minutes of extra time to give Jurgen Klopp’s team victory at Karlsruher’s BBBank Wildpark stadium.

Darwin Nez, the Uruguayan striker Jota replaced at halftime, had given the visitors the lead in the third minute after some excellent interaction with Mohamed Salah.

Lars Stindl and Sebastian Jung scored goals either side of halftime for the 2. Bundesliga side.

At the halfway mark, Klopp made a number of changes, including replacing fellow midfield addition Dominik Szoboszlai with summer acquisition Alexis Mac Allister.

However, it was another two half-time replacements that turned things around for the 19-time English winners.

After a cushioned header from Jota, Cody Gakpo made a nice turn and finish in the heart of the box to pull Liverpool level in the 69th minute.

In stoppage time, Jota took over to give Liverpool a winning start to their preparations for a season in which they would be aiming to return to the Champions League.

Klopp named a solid starting lineup that included Virgil van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Ibrahima Konaté, Luis Daz, Nunez, and Salah. However, captain Jordan Henderson was left out of the team amid speculations that he is set to join Saudi Pro League club Al Ettifaq.
