Liverpool regains control as they defeat Sheffield United thanks to late strikes.

With a nervous 3-1 home win over bottom-place Sheffield United on Thursday, Alexis Mac Allister’s thunderbolt and Cody Gakpo’s late header gave Liverpool the lead back in an exciting Premier League championship contest.
With two wins over Arsenal and three over champion Manchester City, who also prevailed on Wednesday to increase the pressure, Liverpool leads the standings with 70 points from 30 games.

Darwin Nunez’s odd goal after 17 minutes, in which he tackled goalkeeper Ivo Grbic and stopped his effort to clear into the net, seemed to be the catalyst for Liverpool’s comeback as they searched for the victory they needed to knock Arsenal out of the top place they had held the day before.
However, Jurgen Klopp’s team was far from optimal, and just after halftime, Connor Bradley’s own goal startled the Anfield audience by tying the score.
Before Mac Allister’s loose ball came out and he hammered a twisting right-foot strike into the top corner in the 76th minute, the visitors were capable of holding on for a shock point.
As Klopp is ready to depart at the end of the season, Liverpool took another step toward the ideal send-off as Gakpo secured the points in the ninetieth minute.
“Digging quite deep was necessary, but that is typical. While our mentality was outstanding, there were several instances when the football was subpar, according to Klopp. “Then Macca’s goal was the complete game changer.”
United is headed for a quick return to the Championship, sitting at the bottom of the table and 10 points from safety.
Liverpool has the knack of maintaining victories even when output falters is the secret to winning championships.
Under the Anfield lights, United was expected to offer sacrifices like lambs, but they gave their hosts a serious worry until Argentina midfielder Mac Allister’s magical moment calmed everyone down.
Mac Allister put an end to Liverpool’s attempts to contain a rampant United team, sending the home fans into raptures with a ferocious strike that sailed past a defenseless Grbic and spun and rose into the top corner.
“You’re counting for that shot to go into the Kop and give you some more time. But that’s precisely why these players are elite; they give it their all,” said Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder with regret.
If it seemed amazing, Liverpool’s first goal had been hilarious because Grbic took too long to complete a simple clearing, and Nunez sprang to stop the ball from bouncing off the Uruguayan with his back to goal and into an empty net.
The opening minute of play saw Liverpool start sloppily, with James McAtee missing an opportunity when Caoimhin Kelleher saved his shot.
Even with an incredible 83% of the play, Liverpool never looked comfortable, and an increasingly certain United equalized when Gustavo Hamer met a cross with a header that just missed Bradley’s thigh.
But Liverpool proved resilient, winning seven of their previous eight league games.
