Lenny Kravitz Thanking Parents and Delivering a Call for Unity at People’s Choice Awards 2024: ‘Let Love Rule’

On Sunday, Lenny Kravitz received the 2024 People’s Choice Awards’ People’s Music Icon award, recognizing him as a confirmed rock icon.
The 59-year-old rocker, who rose to prominence with 1989’s “Let Love Rule,” performed a medley of hits from his incredible career, including his breakout hit, “Fly Away,” “It Ain’t Over ’til It’s Over,” “Are You Gonna Go My Way,” and the more recent single, “TK421.”

The audience erupted in shouts for Kravitz as he took the “incredible” award from Victoria Monét, 34, and added in his address that part of the term “icon” meant “daring to be different” and being yourself rather than doing something “inauthentic” for money.
“An icon, to me, is someone who inspires and teaches others to believe in themselves, and their direction, whatever that direction is,” he went on to say. “It’s never been about how many albums I sell or how many prizes I get. It is not about attempting to write hits, being calculating, or following a formula. It’s about appreciating and being thankful for the trip, as well as utilizing the talents that God has given you, and the journey will take you where it will. And it will continue because I’m simply being myself.”
Kravitz also praised other individuals who have been with him “through this incredible journey,” including his parents, Roxie Roker and Sy Kravitz, “for taking me to all those amazing concerts when I was a kid instead of leaving me at home with a babysitter.”
He finished his emotional address, “Love is the most powerful force, and love will triumph. We are all one: one God, one people, and one planet. Let love dominate, everyone.”
The genre-defying singer/guitarist, whose career spans over 30 years, was named this year’s music icon award winner in January.
Jen Neal, Executive Vice President, Live Events and Specials, NBCUniversal Entertainment, issued the following statement on their choice to acknowledge the Grammy winner: “With 11 studio albums across a decades-long career, Lenny Kravitz has cemented himself as a global rock superstar.”
“Whether he’s writing and performing his own hit songs or working behind the scenes writing for other industry greats, Lenny’s musical gift is truly unmatched,” Neal went on to say. “We’re thrilled to honor him as this year’s Music Icon and look forward to seeing what he brings to the stage.”
Kravitz was awarded with Sunday’s accolade just weeks after receiving the Recording Academy Global Impact accolade ahead of the 2024 Grammy Awards.
Recently, “Road to Freedom,” the rock star’s song for the 2023 biopic Rustin starring Colman Domingo as civil rights pioneer Bayard Rustin, has gained a lot of attention, including Golden Globe and Critics Choice Award nominations.
The “American Woman” singer is presently preparing to release his 12th studio album, Electric Blue Light, on May 24 via Roxie and BMG. The highly anticipated project is his first full-length album since 2018’s Raise Vibrations.
Kravitz released the first track for the forthcoming album “TK421” in October of last year, paired with an internet-breaking music video.
While appearing on the cover of a recent edition of PEOPLE, the hitmaker reminisced on his long career and early days as a Black musician whose sound spanned rock, funk, and soul.
“I was told my music wasn’t black enough or white enough,” Kravitz recalled, adding that record companies “said I had to make a choice, but I never did.”
The singer went on to say, “I was advised that I needed to produce the music that Black people commercially make and that is on the radio, so you’d be successful. And I could never get behind any of it. I was going to produce the music I created.”
“It’s sort of amazing to me that I could be where I am now and feel fresh and hungry,” she said. “This is who God designed me to be. I’m simply trying to follow that destiny.”
