Las Vegas police execute a search warrant in the Tupac Shakur murder investigation.

Authorities in Nevada announced Tuesday that a search warrant was issued this week in connection with the long-unsolved murder of artist Tupac Shakur over 30 years ago.

Shakur, one of hip-hop’s most prolific personalities, was slain in a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas on September 7, 1996. He was 25.

The search warrant was carried out Monday in the adjacent city of Henderson, according to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. What they were searching for and where they were looking are unknown.

In a quick phone contact, department spokeswoman Aden OcampoGomez said he couldn’t share any further information on the newest development in the case due to the ongoing investigation.

Shakur was killed down while riding in a black sedan with Death Row Records’ head, Marion “Suge” Knight. The two were parked at a red light near the Las Vegas Strip when a white Cadillac came up next to them and shooting began, according to police.

Shakur was shot numerous times and brought to the hospital, where he died a week later.

There have never been any arrests. According to Las Vegas police, the investigation was rapidly halted, in part because witnesses refused to participate.

There is no statute of limitations in Nevada for prosecuting murder charges.

Shakur, widely regarded as one of the most influential and versatile rappers of all time, has had five No. 1 albums: 1995’s “Me Against the World,” 1996’s “All Eyez on Me,” and three posthumous releases: 1996’s “The Don Killuminati: The 7 Day Theory,” recorded under the name Makaveli, 2001’s “Until the End of Time,” and 2004’s “Loyal to the Game.”

Snoop Dogg inducted him into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017. The rapper was honoured with a posthumous star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in June of this year. He’s also had various museum displays dedicated to his life, such as “Tupac Shakur. “Wake Me When I’m Free,” which will be released in 2021.

Shakur’s professional music career lasted barely five years, yet he amassed 21 Billboard Hot 100s, including top ten successes “Dear Mama” and “Old School” in 1995, as well as his best-known tune, 1996’s “How Do U Want It/California Love” with K-Ci and JoJo. The latter spent two weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 thanks to his last studio album and Death Row Records debut, “All Eyez on Me.”

Shakur has sold 33 million albums, 41 million when track sales and streaming equivalents are included, according to entertainment analytics firm Luminate. The rapper has 10.1 billion on-demand video and audio streams.
