Lakers versus. Nuggets Preview: The King Meets the Joker in the NBA Finals

The Los Angeles Lakers and Denver Nuggets will face off on Tuesday, with the winner advancing to the NBA Finals.

The Los Angeles Lakers are the most decorated team in NBA history. They have a record-tying 17 titles and are just eight victories away from matching the Boston Celtics for the most Larry O’Brien trophies in history. Jerry Buss and Kobe Bryant must be smiling up in heaven at the prospect of it.

Meanwhile, the Nuggets are aiming for their first NBA Finals trip in club history, attempting to join the list of 11 current NBA teams who have never won a title.

LeBron James, considered the greatest player of all time, leads the Lakers. James is aiming for his sixth crown. Anthony “The Brow” Davis plays beside LeBron. In the autumn of 2020, James and Davis won the NBA “Bubble” championship in Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida. They also faced the Denver Nuggets in the Western Conference Finals that season.

The Lakers are hoping for history to repeat itself, while the Nuggets are seeking vengeance.

The Nuggets are led by two-time MVP Nikola “The Joker” Jokic. The Joker is enjoying another MVP-caliber season, coming second to this year’s victor, Philadelphia 76ers’ Joel Embiid. This season, Jokic is averaging 24.5 points, 11.8 rebounds, and 9.8 assists.

This season, the Lakers and Nuggets split their four-game season series, with each club winning all four games at home. All four of those games, however, took place before January 9, 2023. That’s around six weeks before the NBA trade deadline, when the Lakers restructured their whole roster, moving six players and bringing in six new players who have been crucial to their roster and deep playoff run.

Needless to say, this series is a toss-up; some bookmakers have the Lakers as minor favourites, while others have the Nuggets as favourites. According to ESPN Analytics, the Nuggets have a 52 percent probability of winning the series, while the Lakers have a 48 percent chance.

If it’s experience and star power that counts, the Lakers have two of the top-10 players in the NBA and the championship pedigree to return to the finals. If home-court advantage and a core group that has been with the longest are more significant, the Nuggets will make their first-ever Finals appearance.

Throughout the series, Nikola Jokic and Anthony Davis are anticipated to compete at the centre position on both sides of the court. That means LeBron James must dominate his one-on-one showdown with either Aaron Gordon or Michael Porter Jr. If James can dominate the contest, the Lakers have a good chance of progressing.

One area where the Nuggets can capitalise is at the point guard position. Jamal Murray is back to full fitness after missing the whole season due to a knee ailment. Murray is a defensive nightmare for D’Angelo Russell, therefore Lakers head coach Darvin Ham will almost certainly play another point guard, Dennis Schröder, opposite Russell in the backcourt to defend Murray.

Jarred Vanderbilt, a long and athletic wing defender, is expected to guard Murray as well. Again, if the Lakers can slow down Murray, they have a good chance of advancing, but if Murray goes hot, Denver has a good chance.
