Kevin Durant and LeBron James Exchange Accolades Following Anticipated Battle

Two of the best players in history faced up on the court for the first time in a long time.

On the basketball court, it has been almost five years since Phoenix Suns forward Kevin Durant and Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James last met paths.

Their initial response did not let them down as the Lakers ultimately prevailed 100-95 thanks to a strong fourth-quarter comeback.

Without the assistance of Devin Booker or Bradley Beal, Durant finished the game with 39 points, 11 rebounds, two assists, one steal, and one block. That night, he was often double- and even triple-teamed.

James demonstrated his dominance in a classic manner with a performance that featured 21 points, eight rebounds, nine assists, two steals, and two blocks—even though Anthony Davis led Los Angeles in scoring.

Both players have had the honor of being coached by Frank Vogel, who is now the Suns’ leader after having previously played for the Lakers.

Vogel said, “There were a few times when you just appreciate what the fans are watching.”

“Just two of the greatest players in history going head to head. A few incidents out there. The NBA season’s second game saw very fierce competition. It seemed like a postseason match outside. A bout of boxing. A drag-out… It was quite wonderful to see those two men out there battling for it.

After an explosive third quarter, the Suns led by as much as 12 points at one point. However, they lost all steam in the fourth quarter, shooting 1-13 from the field and letting the Lakers fight back.

After the game, Durant said, “It was tough.” He was essentially instructing the players on how to defend certain plays. He has spent his whole career doing it. Playing against players with such high IQs is always difficult.

James said that he isn’t going to take Durant’s time on the floor for granted any more.

James said, “We don’t have many matchups left because we’ve had so many battles.” You never want to take anything for granted when you’re out there with a great player—one of the greatest to have ever played this game—because you never know how many we have left. It’s always enjoyable. I like it.
