Kai Jones has announced that he has requested a trade.

Kai Jones, a third-year center, wants to leave Charlotte. On Monday afternoon, the Hornets center announced through Twitter (X) that he has wanted to be moved from the team. Jones may face a $150k punishment for publicly expressing his wish to be transferred, according to the CBA.

Everyone who has been paying attention to this issue has probably seen this coming. Jones has not been with the club since they returned to Charlotte for voluntary workouts and did not attend training camp.

During his first two seasons, the former 2021 first-round lottery pick averaged 2.7 points, 2.1 rebounds, and 0.5 blocks per game.

Given Jones’ tiny sample size and minimal output, the Hornets are unlikely to receive anything in return for him. Another team, though, could be ready to take a risk on what is still a first-round talent in need of a change of scenery.

Jones has spent the last several months producing some odd Instagram videos and has gone too far when it comes to calling out his teammates on Twitter.

Jones was anticipated to see little time this season in Charlotte, with Mark Williams proving to be the Hornets’ answer as a rookie and Nick Richards improving as a backup.

The Hornets will begin preseason action on the road against the Miami Heat tomorrow.
