Last year, Miami Heat player Jimmy Butler wore dreadlocks to media day. Butler wore a new outfit this year. Butler came to Kaseya Centre for media day on Monday with a “emo” style that includes straightened hair and pierced lips, nose, and brow. Butler’s fingernails were likewise blackened. “I’m feeling this,” Butler said. “I’m feeling very emotional right now.” This is my emo condition, and I like it. This is how I’ve been feeling recently.”
Last year, the dreadlocks were short-lived, as Butler began the season sans them. Throughout the season, photographs of Butler wearing dreadlocks were used in broadcasts and other promotional materials. When asked whether he’ll start the season with this emo appearance, Butler kept the door open.
“I mean, I never know how I’m going to wake up in the morning, man,” remarked Butler. “So that’s how I feel today, and we’ll see how I feel tomorrow.” Who knows, maybe I’ll be completely yellow tomorrow.”
Bam Adebayo, Butler’s Heat co-star, couldn’t believe it when he saw a shot of Butler’s media day appearance. “There’s no way that’s him. “Y’all are [expletive] lying,” Adebayo laughed. “What is the matter with this man?” No, guy. That is not true. Oh my goodness, man. I should have gone with a blonde fro. In training camp, I’m going to start having fun.” On Tuesday, the Heat will begin training camp at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton. It’s unclear if Butler will show up to camp wearing his “emo” appearance. “I’m at one with my emotional state,” Butler said. “So this is what you get.”
