Jim Harbaugh claims he was’starstruck’ when he met Justin Herbert

Jim Harbaugh wants to make it apparent that he is very proud to be a Michigan man, but other aspects of the NFL were too seductive to pass up, such as the large silver trophy awarded to Super Bowl winners.

“I adore Michigan, but I also enjoy the NFL. “There is no Lombardi Trophy in college football,” Harbaugh said on Sunday, prior of the AFC Championship Game. “I’ve got so many sands left in the hourglass, and I want to try my hand at it. There’s no better place to do it than with the Los Angeles Chargers.

They were Harbaugh’s first public remarks since taking over as head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers, and they came on the pregame program before his brother John coached the Baltimore Ravens against the Kansas City Chiefs. (The Chiefs beat the Ravens, advancing to the Super Bowl).

Jim Harbaugh has a daunting assignment in Los Angeles, taking over a Chargers club that finished 5-12 this season and is expected to be more than $50 million over the salary cap. However, he expressed excitement at the opportunity to work with quarterback Justin Herbert.

“I met him, and Derwin James, and — pro’s pros these guys — and Keenan Allen,” Harbaugh was quoted as saying. “But I was a little starstruck, meeting Justin.”

When asked about the atmosphere he wants to create around the Chargers, Harbaugh mentioned some of the values he valued at Michigan.

“We work together.” We win together. “It’s worthwhile,” he remarked. “Why would someone put themselves through all that hard work, sacrifice, and pressure? Because the benefits are so damned great.”

Prior to taking over at Michigan in 2015, Harbaugh led the San Francisco 49ers for four seasons, finishing 44-19. He appeared in three consecutive NFC championship games, falling to Baltimore and his brother John in Super Bowl XLVII.

The Chargers and Ravens are set to meet in 2024, although the date has yet to be confirmed. Jim Harbaugh’s first news conference with the Chargers is slated for Tuesday.
