In the Carabao Cup, Fulham defeated Tottenham on penalties.

Fulham overcame Tottenham Hotspur 5-3 on penalties to go to the third round of the League Cup after drawing 1-1 at Craven Cottage on Tuesday, while second-tier Leeds United were knocked out by Salford City.

Tottenham defender Davinson Sánchez failed to convert their third penalty attempt, as Fulham keeper Marek Rodak stopped low to his left, before Fulham’s Joo Palhinha and Kenny Tete both scored to seal the win.

Fulham grabbed the lead in the 19th minute of the London derby thanks to a close-range own goal from Tottenham defender Micky van de Ven.

Four-time champions Tottenham had no shots on goal in the first half, and the hosts might have led by two goals before the interval, but Spurs keeper Fraser Forster produced a spectacular stop to deny a Rodrigo Muniz header right before the break.

Ange Postecoglou’s team equalised in the 56th minute when Richarlison nodded home from a tight angle after connecting with a lofted cross by Ivan Perisic.

Fulham, on the other hand, came close to winning in normal time when Harry Wilson sprinted onto a sloppy ball inside the box, but Forster’s stop kept Spurs in the game.

Second Division Salford City defeated Leeds United 9-8 on penalties after a 1-1 stalemate. Both teams missed penalties in the opening five minutes before Leeds’ Jamie Shackleton hit the crossbar, allowing Salford’s Ossama Ashley to claim victory.

Second-tier Plymouth Argyle seemed to be on pace for another surprise when they lead 2-0 against Premier League Crystal Palace, but Roy Hodgson’s team came back to win 4-2.

Plymouth took an early lead via Ben Waine, and Luke Cundle doubled the advantage after the interval, but Palace striker Odsonne Édouard equalised shortly before the hour mark, followed by a hat-trick from Jean-Philippe Mateta.

Bournemouth rallied from a goal down to defeat second-tier Swansea City 3-2, giving manager Andoni Iraola his first victory in charge.

Wolverhampton Wanderers thrashed League One Blackpool 5-0, while Luton Town, who are yet to pick up a point in their first two games in the Premier League, defeated League Two Gillingham 3-2.

Wilfred Ndidi and Jamie Vardy scored in the second half to give Championship leaders Leicester City a 2-0 victory against League Two Tranmere Rovers.
