Heated Wetsuits and Benches! How the Chiefs and Travis Kelce Are Gearing Up for Record-Cold Playoffs

The Chiefs of Kansas City are prepared to face the cold!

The Chiefs take on the Miami Dolphins in what is expected to be the coldest game in Kansas City history as the defending Super Bowl winners attempt to win an NFL championship for the second time in a row.

On January 13 at 7:00 p.m. CT, Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City will host the wild card playoff game. The National Weather Service reports that a winter weather advisory is in effect for Kansas City until January 16. Furthermore, wind chill advisories indicating temperatures “as low as 35 below zero.”

The Miami Dolphins, who are situated in Florida, had lost 10 consecutive games when the temperature was 40° F or below at kickoff. In contrast, the Kansas City club is used to playing in frigid temperatures. (Interestingly, the Chiefs game in 2008 at Arrowhead began in 10° F, which was the Fins’ coldest game ever.)

Over his 41-year career with the Kansas City Chiefs, Allen Wright, the organization’s director of equipment, confides exclusively to PEOPLE that his squad has played in “fair share of cold weather games”. “There’s really not much of a difference till you get into single digits. It’s only chilly,” he remarks.

When asked whether he believes the Chiefs’ edge against the Dolphins stems from the cold, Wright responds that he hears the question “all the time.” According to his observations, because Miami athletes “may have gone to college and played in a cold weather climate,” “it doesn’t really matter.”

Whether the temps shatter records or not, Wright assures PEOPLE that the Chiefs are ready. The veteran equipment director notes that because “everyone is so subjective when it comes to the cold,” he “tries to give everybody as many options as possible.”

Football fans can be confident that superstar tight end Taylor Swift will be prepared to play in any direction, even though Swifties will be excited to see whether she shows out to the game to support her boyfriend Travis Kelce. Travis, according to Wright, is “a good Cleveland kid, so he’s used to the cold!”
