Paige Bueckers is a cherished fan favorite and a key player in the quickly expanding sport of women’s collegiate basketball.
The UConn star is seldom not the subject of social media, but on Monday, her popularity increased even further.
At the 2021 ESPYs, Bueckers was named the greatest collegiate athlete in women’s sports. Rather of concentrating on her own achievements, the 19-year-old sophomore opted to honor the successes of Black women in the sport.
“I want to shed light on Black women with the light that I have now as a White woman who leads a Black-led sport and is celebrated here,” Bueckers said. “They don’t get the appropriate amount of media attention. Their importance is indisputable as they have contributed so much to the sport, the neighborhood, and society at large.
She went on, “I think it’s time for change.” Storylines are mostly determined by sports media. You have shown the world that I am important today, and to all of the voters, thank you. Sports media and sponsors define who is significant. However, I believe that we should jointly honor Black women by using this power.
Social media users are once again sharing Bueckers’s popular remarks.
“This speech by Paige Bueckers still gives me the chills,” a supporter said.
“Reminder that paige bueckers isn’t just a great athlete but a great person as well,” another wrote.
“The thing about Paige Bueckers is that as good as she is at basketball, she’s an even better human being,” someone else added.
Bueckers, the star of collegiate basketball, is expected to rejoin the Huskies for her last season.
