Following the announcement of his new connection with Ariana Grande, Ethan Slater is said to have filed for divorce from his wife.
According to TMZ, Slater, 31, filed for divorce in New York on Wednesday. The cause for his breakup with Lilly Jay was not disclosed. Slater and Jay were contacted for comment.
Six years after they started dating, the actor married Jay in November 2018. The former couple also had a son, who was born in August 2022.
After the connection between Slater and Grande became public, a source told PEOPLE, “Ariana and Dalton [Gomez] separated in January.” She and Ethan have just recently started dating, and he is divorced from his wife.”
Although Slater’s Instagram is now hidden, he previously posted many photos with Jay, including a Mother’s Day post that Grande ‘liked’ and read: ‘Happy first Mother’s Day to the most loving kind and lovely mom/person in the world. – from me and this little boy.’

While little is known about what prompted their breakup, a second source earlier told PEOPLE that Grande, 30, and Gomez, 27, divorced after almost two years of marriage due to distance.
“She was content in Los Angeles for a few years. “She wanted to make a life with Dalton there,” the person claimed. “He is obsessed with his career and needs to live in Los Angeles.” It has undoubtedly been a problem for them. Dalton’s job is demanding, and he doesn’t get out of Los Angeles very frequently. So when [Grande] began shooting Wicked in England, they knew they were in for a long-distance marriage.”
Although the film adaption of Wicked was announced in 2016, rehearsals did not begin until 2022, with director Jon M. Chu stating that production started in December.
During the SAG strike in July, there were allegations that work had been halted when Universal’s Buckinghamshire village was shot vacant. Chu subsequently confirmed the shooting delay on his Instagram Story, stating that they were “only a few days” away from completion when the SAG strike suspended production.
