“Confident” Babar Azam Michael Jones after Pakistan’s World Cup win 07:22
Pakistan skipper Babar Azam feels more confident in his batting following his team’s win over New Zealand.
Babar is one of the top red-ball and white-ball batters in the world, yet he averaged 7.8 in the Super 12s group stage, scoring 39 runs in 63 balls.
Trent Boult’s opening throw touched his outside edge, but Devon Conway missed the chance.

Eoin Morgan is’really happy’ of England’s new leadership.
Michael Jones
Eoin Morgan is proud that England’s new leadership preserves the same ideas he used to become them world champions.
Morgan’s stint as white-ball skipper began poorly as England fell out of the 2015 50-over World Cup, a turning point for their ODI and T20 fortunes.
Morgan introduced a more open and attack-minded attitude, which led to England’s 2019 World Cup victory before he departed in June.
Jos Buttler has taken over as Morgan’s deputy, working with new head coach Matthew Mott, and England are two victories from the T20 World Cup title.

Alex Hales downplays England’s comeback
Michael Jones
Alex Hales said he’s simply pleased to be back in the England set-up after guiding them to the T20 World Cup final.
Hales’ positive recreational drugs test before the 2019 50-over World Cup was one misdemeanour too many, and he spent the next three-and-a-half years in the international wilderness.
Jason Roy’s summer slump and Jonny Bairstow’s golfing injury gave Alex Hales a chance, and he took it.
Hales played vital roles in England’s last two must-win group games against New Zealand and Sri Lanka, but he justified his recall in Thursday’s 10-wicket semi-final hammering of India in Adelaide.

Mark Wood isn’t suited for England.
Michael Jones, 07:00
Mark Wood is doubtful for today’s T20 World Cup final in Melbourne. With a right hip injury, the 32-year-old missed Thursday’s semi-final triumph against India.
He is England’s quickest bowler and has nine wickets in four Super 12 matches.
Wood tried to make the last game but couldn’t bowl fast enough for England. “My hip wouldn’t move.” I hope I can get it perfect for this game, but I’m not sure. If the captain needs me and I’m fit, I’ll throw my name in like everyone else.”

World Cup organisers change final’s regulations
06:53, Jones
Men’s T20 World Cup organisers have altered the rules for today’s final in Melbourne to enable additional time for weather delays.
Rain affected some Super 12 matches, and poor weather is anticipated for the following two days in Melbourne.
England plays Pakistan on Sunday at 08:00 GMT. A reserve day is set for Monday, but further rain is anticipated, therefore two hours have been added.
If a 10-over-per-side match cannot be played on either day, England and Pakistan will share the victory.
Alex Hales and Jos Buttler help England reach T20 World Cup final.
06:45, Jones
Alex Hales and Jos Buttler beat India in the T20 World Cup final in Adelaide.
Hales and Buttler smashed India’s bowlers in a record-breaking unbroken partnership of 170 as England won by 10 wickets.
Hales (86 not out off 47 balls) and Buttler (80no off 49 deliveries) disabused India of that notion in jaw-dropping form.

England vs. Pakistan 06:30 Jones
Voilà. The T20 final. A game that will decide who lifts the trophy and enters cricket history and who goes home defeated.
Good morning and welcome to The Independent’s coverage of England vs. Pakistan at the MCG.
Both teams’ seasons have been challenging. Pakistan needed to win their remaining three Super 12 matches to qualify for the final four, and the Netherlands’ win against South Africa helped them. Babar Azam’s team improved greatly in the semi-final and comfortably knocked off New Zealand had chased down a total of 153 with five balls remaining.
Similar problems plagued England. Rain-affected losses to Ireland and Australia left them behind in the Super 12 groupings. They needed to beat New Zealand and Sri Lanka to qualify. Jos Buttler’s players rallied to the challenge and advanced to meet India.
What should have been a finely contested game turned into a one-sided affair as England thrashed India. In T20 cricket, 10-wickets in four overs is a spanking.
Today’s winner? In T20 cricket, games may turn in an over, and these teams are evenly matched. On their day, Pakistan can defeat anyone in the world. This should be great.
