Eagles start as underdogs versus. Chiefs in the Super Bowl of 2023, but the line rapidly shifts to Philadelphia

Super Bowl underdogs for the Philadelphia Eagles weren’t for very long.

At BetMGM, the Kansas City Chiefs began as 1.5-point underdogs in the Super Bowl. After a short while, the line changed to Eagles -1.5. After a short while, it changed once more to Eagles -2.5. That is a prompt response to the Eagles, who played well in their victory in the NFC championship game.

The Super Bowl’s opening over/under was set at 49.5 points.

Super Bowl lines often alter. There are two weeks for bettors to stake their wagers on either side of the game, which has a large amount of money at stake. Before the game on February 12 begins, the line may alter once again. But the Eagles were the team that gamblers immediately jumped on.

the clubs’ Super Bowl history

In the NFC championship game, the Philadelphia Eagles defeated the San Francisco 49ers 31-7, handily covering a 2.5-point spread. At BetMGM, the Eagles had opening Super Bowl odds of 40-to-1.

The Eagles were underdogs twice in each of their first three Super Bowl appearances. In Super Bowl XXXIX, they were a 7-point underdog against the New England Patriots and lost 24-21 while covering the spread. As 4-point underdogs against the Patriots in Super Bowl LII, the Eagles came out on top.

The Cincinnati Bengals were defeated 23-20 by the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC championship game. Throughout the week, the spread fluctuated between Chiefs -2.5 and Bengals -2.5, yet the Chiefs won every time. Before Sunday, the Chiefs had one of the worst records in the NFL this year against the spread, going only 5-12-1.

The Chiefs have been to the Super Bowl three times in the last four years. They had the advantage in the previous two Super Bowls Patrick Mahomes played in. In Super Bowl LIV, they defeated the San Francisco 49ers as a 1.5-point favourite, while in Super Bowl LV, they fell to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as a 3-point favourite. The Chiefs defeated the Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl IV despite being a 12-point underdog. In Super Bowl I, they faced the Green Bay Packers as a 14-point underdog, and they fell victim to a 35-10 defeat.

Super Bowl advantage for favourites

The Super Bowl point spread history on Vegas Insider shows that favourites are 28-25-2 against the spread. Super Bowl XLIX, one Super Bowl, was a pick’em. The Patriots defeated the Seattle Seahawks in that game.

Super Bowl wagerers had an uncommon year last year. However, the favourite failed to cover. With a 4.5-point advantage, the Los Angeles Rams defeated the Cincinnati Bengals 23-20. Only seven times in the history of the Super Bowl did the underdog cover but lose. Since the Pittsburgh Steelers-Arizona Cardinals Super Bowl at the conclusion of the 2008 season, it hadn’t occurred.

The sum was not reached in any of the previous four Super Bowls. As a result, the overall total now stands at 28 unders and 27 overs (according to Vegas Insider’s records, there was no total for Super Bowl I).

The queue may be among the shortest in Super Bowl history if it travels back toward Kansas City. One included the Chiefs, who three years ago were 1.5-point favourites while playing the 49ers.
