Dwyane Wade addresses ex-wife’s objection to Zaya’s name change

Wade initially addressed his ex-legal wife’s problem on Instagram on Thursday morning.

Dwyane Wade is coming out after his ex-wife Siohvaughn Funches-Wade claimed in a court document that he’s trying to profit off their transgender daughter Zaya’s “name and gender transformation.” and continued to say that ‘This isn’t a game’

Funches-Wade filed an objection to a Los Angeles County court on Tuesday, Nov. 1, urging Zaya Wade wait until “the age of majority” to make permanent identification changes.

The press requested response from Funches-legal Wade’s team and Dwyane Wade’s rep on November 2, but neither responded.

Dwyane Wade originally addressed the legal matter on Instagram early Thursday, Nov. 3.

“Since this must be the new style of parenting, I guess I have to answer these charges here, which is a damn shame,” Wade remarked on Instagram. “I got a social media post about me forcing our 15-year-old daughter to be someone she’s not and do something against her will while on a life-changing trip to Africa. These terrible accusations have damaged our children.”

Funches-Wade and Wade have a 20-year-old son, Zaire Wade. Wade has a 3-year-old daughter Kaavia with Gabrielle Union and an 8-year-old son Xavier with Aja Metoyer.

“While none of us are shocked by Siohvaughn’s attempt to battle Zaya’s identity and her persistent attempt to drag my name through the dirt, I’m extremely saddened that she consistently find methods to centre herself and HER demands, without regard to her children,” he continued. “Zaya learned about this report in class. This youngster has maintained a 4.0 GPA in honours classes while managing unwanted and detrimental attention and disputes over her gender and sexuality from individuals who are determined to not listening to her, much less understanding her.”

Since Zaya Wade came out as transgender in 2020, her father has publicly supported her. In June 2022, he addressed the press about his biggest parenting lesson: letting his kids see their “true selves.”

“I think we have to evolve as parents and recognise that our kids’ lives are not only about us,” he remarked. “They weren’t mini-us. We must discover who they will become in this world.

“I maintain that our kid should be given the option to decide for themselves at the age of majority if they want to continue through with changing their name and/or gender,” Funches-Wade stated in court filings filed on Tuesday, Nov. 1.

She also claimed that the case is a “parental rights problem” and that her ex-husband is profiting from Zaya Wade’s brand partnerships as a former basketball star “

Siohvaughn did a similar attempt over a decade earlier (with similarly terrible falsehoods and irreparable injury to her children), and 13 attorneys later, I was given exclusive custody of our two kids as an active NBA player “Wade said. “All I wanted was uninterrupted parenting time, since I knew it would be incredibly difficult for our kids to negotiate their new normal.”

“So Instead of genuinely attempting to co-parent throughout the years, she’s left her house to see more attorneys and has taken the time to talk to more lawyers since I filed for divorce,” he said of Funches-Wade.

In court documents, Wade’s ex-wife stated outside circumstances might impact Zaya Wade’s name and gender reassignment. In the filing, Funches-Wade stated, “This case has been heavily covered in the media and there will certainly be media pressure on the underage kid.”

“I’ve given her the chance to reach out to Zaya’s teachers, physicians and therapist throughout the years and even meet her friends, so she could have her own idea of our child’s requirements for her LIFE,” Wade said. “She won’t! Zaya has given her every chance to get to know her, but she has never been to school, recital, graduation, school dance, play date, practise, parent-teacher conference, etc. She won’t.

Later: “Zaya is screaming to the world and especially to her mother that she is no longer a 3-year-old! Zaya and our other children would never be forced to adopt an identity. My family and Zaya don’t play this. Her life.”

Dec. 12 is the case resolution hearing.
