Doja Cat Teaches Her Demons in the 2023 MTV VMAs Performance

Doja Cat approached the stage at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards on Tuesday (Sept. 12) ready to “Paint the Town Red” — and she did just that.

The singer approached the stage at Newark’s Prudential Centre in a teacher-inspired attire, surrounded by red-toned, wicked dancers, and played a mix of songs including her Billboard Hot 100 chart-toppers “Red” and “Attention,” as well as new single “Demons.” The tracks will appear on her fourth studio album, Scarlet, which will be released on September 22.

This week, “Paint the Town Red” jumped from third to first place on the Hot 100. It is the rapper-singer’s second career number one single, after “Say So” with Nicki Minaj in 2020. The milestone is the first rap Hot 100 No. 1 in almost a year, ending the genre’s longest reign at the top of the chart since 2001.

Doja Cat is up for six categories at this year’s ceremony, including song of the summer for “Paint the Town Red”; best directing, best art direction, and video of the year for “Attention”; and artist of the year and best collaboration for “I Like You (A Happier Song)” with Post Malone.

Among this year’s other performers are Anitta, Cardi B, Demi Lovato, Diddy, Doja Cat, Fall Out Boy, Karol G, Kelsea Ballerini, Maneskin, Megan Thee Stallion, Metro Boomin (featuring Future, A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie, Swae Lee and NAV), Nicki Minaj, Olivia Rodrigo, Peso Pluma, Shakira, Stray Kids and TOMORROW X TOGETHER.
