Detroit Pistons player arrested and charged for hitting opponent before game.

Detroit Pistons guard Isaiah Stewart was detained and charged during an argument with a Phoenix Suns player before Wednesday’s NBA game between the two clubs.

Stewart was arrested for assault, given a ticket, and released, according to a Phoenix Police Department press release, after hitting Drew Eubanks.

Stewart, 22, is in his fourth season with the Pistons, while Eubanks, 27, plays forward for the Suns.

Police said cops at Phoenix’s Footprint Center were alerted about a confrontation between the two players around 4:45 p.m. local (6:45 p.m. ET) in the arena’s parking lot tunnel.

An dispute between the two players intensified, resulting in Stewart hitting Eubanks, who sustained a slight injury, according to authorities. Police separated the two males.

“Detectives responded to investigate the incident and collect evidence,” Phoenix Police stated, adding the investigation is still ongoing.

“The attack on Drew Eubanks was unprovoked, and such violence is unacceptable,” a Suns official told CNN.

“We unequivocally support Drew and will continue to work with local law enforcement and the NBA.”

The Pistons also said that they are aware of the event and “are in the process of gathering information about what happened and what provoked it, as well as responding to the NBA and local authorities.”

CNN has contacted Stewart’s representation for comment on his detention.

In 2021, Stewart got into an incident on the floor with superstar LeBron James, who made contact with the Pistons player’s face. As a consequence, James received his first game suspension without pay.

Stewart was previously ruled out of Wednesday’s game, which the Suns won 116-110, due to a sprained left ankle.

After the game, Pistons head coach Monty Williams said he and other club officials spoke with Stewart, who told them his version of the incident. He also chastised the Suns for the statement issued after the event.

“I know the Suns put out a statement and said it was unprovoked,” Williams told reporters.

“I believe that is irresponsible […]” I believe there is a time to acquire information before making a remark.

Suns head coach Frank Vogel had no remark on the incident, but did say, “There is no place for anything like that in our game.”
