This season, Los Angeles Lakers coach Darvin Ham is doubling – if not triple – down on Anthony Davis as a 3-point threat.
“I want him, if he can — I know he won’t do it, but maybe he’ll shock me — but I’ve requested to see six 3-point attempts a game,” Ham said in the locker room on Tuesday. “At least three per half.” I wouldn’t put anything on him unless I thought he was competent.”
Through two preseason games, the big man has followed his coach’s instructions, going 3-for-6 on 3-pointers in 27 minutes of restricted play against the Golden State Warriors and the Brooklyn Nets. Davis, who averaged 1.3 attempts per game last season, would see a substantial rise. In his debut season with the Lakers, he averaged 3.5 points per game, which was a career high for him.
To put this in perspective, All-Star guards Darius Garland and Devin Booker both averaged 6.0 3-point attempts per game last season, while the only players in the league to earn regular minutes at power forward or center and shoot at least as many 3s were Julius Randle (8.3) and Lauri Markkanen (7.7).
