FC Red Bull Salzburg vs Chelsea

Chelsea wins against Red Bull Salzburg to advance to the round of 16 in the Champions League.

In a game when both teams had plenty of chances to score, Chelsea defeated Red Bull Salzburg 2-1 to advance to the round of 16 of the Champions League.

Christian Pulisic and Conor Gallagher were two of the four changes Graham Potter made to the lineup that played Manchester United in a Premier League draw.

After a promising start in which Salzburg forced Kepa Arrizabalaga into a few saves, Mateo Kovacic gave Chelsea the lead with a goal-bound effort from the edge of the box.

After that, the visitors kept up the pressure and nearly added a second goal when Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was let through on goal, but Philipp Kohn made a save.

Junior Adamu scored Salzburg’s equaliser after 48 minutes by cushioning a finish past Kepa after being sent through in behind. Salzburg came out for the second half with new life.

Kai Havertz’s long-range shot that deflected off the underside of the crossbar gave Chelsea a chance to respond well and take the lead once more.

Chelsea’s ability to restrict Salzburg’s onslaught after switching to a back four allowed them to finish the match with a crucial win that guaranteed them a spot in the next round of the competition.

The Chelsea midfield excels.

The Blues’ midfield was crucial to their triumph, since this game had the potential to be challenging for them. There were times when Salzburg looked dangerous and had multiple scoring opportunities.

In the middle of the field, Kovacic was unstoppable, effortlessly gliding past opponents, while Conor Gallagher also put on a strong showing. Chelsea always posed a threat because of their inventiveness and drive to advance, even when they sat back late in the game.

The many tactical adjustments made by Chelsea’s new manager throughout the first two months of his tenure have kept the players on their toes. Potter exercises his tactical muscles once more. Christian Pulisic and Raheem Sterling were used as wing backs in Potter’s initial 3-4-3 formation, which allowed the Blues to find space in the wide areas.

However, in the second half, Potter shifted to a back four to blunt the Salaburg onslaught because the game had become a little too open for his taste. This was successful as well, as Chelsea handled the final ten minutes without incident. Potter keeps showcasing his tactical prowess.

Adamu and Sesko are upcoming superstars.

Red Bull Salzburg is well known for producing some of the top strikers in the league (cough… Erling Haaland… cough… Sadio Mane), and they now have two other up-and-coming superstars in Adamu and Benjamin Sesko.

Sesko was a handful when he came off the bench in the second half, forcing Kepa into an amazing stop with a fierce effort from the edge of the box. Adamu scored Salzburg’s equaliser with maturity beyond his years. Learn to recognise these names from the Champions League.
