Charlie McAvoy’s overtime goal helps the Bruins defeat the Oilers 6-5.

After the Bruins lost a three-goal lead, Charlie McAvoy scored in overtime to help Boston defeat the Edmonton Oilers 6-5 on Wednesday night.
3:10 into the extra session, which began with Edmonton on the power play, McAvoy put a backhand past Oilers goalkeeper Stuart Skinner.

Throughout the game, Boston handed away leads of 4-1 and 5-4.
“I really liked how we never stopped moving forward. Positive or bad outcomes didn’t concern us,” Bruins head coach Jim Montgomery said.
“I believed that we kept playing. They obviously made a terrific drive in the third quarter from a fantastic squad, and it sort of snowballed, but we immediately got back to work. I believed we dominated the game and began to push back after they tied it at four.
The Bruins, who had dropped their previous two games before winning the past two, also received goals from Brad Marchand, David Pastrnak, Jake DeBrusk, Trent Frederic, and Morgan Geekie. With 37 saves, Jeremy Swayman got three assists and Mason Lohrei had three.
Swayman said, “I think that’s an identity of ours.” “It was not exactly how we drew it up, but it was really special to get those two points and the way we did it through adversity and their push, I think that’s really something special for our group moving forward.”
The Oilers, who had won eight straight at home, were led by two goals each from Warren Foegele and also got goals from Mattias Janmark, Corey Perry, and Zach Hyman. Skinner warded off thirty bullets.
“You are happy with the way you battled back from down 4-1 to a really good team, to be able to come back twice and earn a point says a lot about our team and how it faces adversity,” Hyman said.
However, you also don’t want to place yourself in that scenario. We need to regain our ability to play consistently throughout the whole game because we have placed ourselves in that situation much too often since returning from the All-Star break.”
Just 2:34 into the first half, Boston scored on a power play as Geekie hit the upper corner from a distance.
With 8:20 remaining in the first period, Connor McDavid flicked a puck off a defender’s stick off the boards to Foegele, who raced into the goal and beat Swayman with a backhand. This gave the Oilers a one-all lead. McDavid’s assist took it to 20 games in which he has scored at home.
Just 25 seconds into the second period, Marchand beat Skinner to the short side and Edmonton coughed up the puck, giving the Bruins a quick lead again. Four minutes later, Frederic gave the team a two-goal advantage by deflecting in Jesper Boqvist’s shot.
With six minutes remaining in the second half, DeBrusk made it 4-1. A minute and a half later, Foegele scored his second goal to make it 4-2 after two.
The third tie was scored 1:10 apart by Janmark and Perry.
Pastrnak’s 36th goal of the season gave Boston a lead again with 7:19 remaining, but Zach Hyman’s goal only 42 seconds later knotted it again for Edmonton.
