The Celtics acquired Xavier Tillman from the Memphis Grizzlies for two future second-round selections, the club announced on Wednesday, providing Boston more big-man depth heading into the stretch run.
Memphis will get the Atlanta Hawks’ 2027 second-round pick and the Dallas Mavericks’ 2030 second-round pick in exchange for forward Lamar Stevens, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.
Tillman, 25, has averaged 6 points and 4.6 rebounds for Memphis in 34 games this season. While his shooting has suffered, he has a 40.8 field goal percentage, including 22.6% from three, and is a formidable defensive presence inside, with 1.2 steals and 1.0 blocks per 20 minutes.
Tillman, who is 6-foot-7, will join Kristaps Porzingis, Al Horford, and Luke Kornet in the heart of Boston’s defense.
The Celtics made a similar deal last season, acquiring Mike Muscala from the Oklahoma City Thunder at the deadline.
For Memphis, it’s another step toward recouping future assets after moving another center, Steven Adams, to the Houston Rockets for Victor Oladipo and three second-round selections last week.
Stevens, 26, joined with Boston in the summer after spending three seasons with the Cleveland Cavaliers. He averaged 2.8 points in 19 games with the Celtics.
