Celine Dion’s sister provides an update on the singer’s stiff-person syndrome struggle and emphasises the importance of optimism.

Celine Dion’s family is rallying behind her as she battles stiff-person syndrome, a rare neurological illness.

Claudette Dion, 74, talked to Le Journal de Montréal about her sister’s time away from the stage months after the “My Heart Will Go On” singer called off her Courage global tour. Claudette said in the July interview that the singer is “working hard.”

“She listens to the great researchers studying this rare disease as much as possible,” Claudette stated in her answer, which was translated from French to English.

Celine Dion, 55, postponed numerous European tour dates and spring 2023 shows in December 2022 after being diagnosed with stiff-person syndrome. She broke the news to her admirers over social media with a video message in both French and English.

According to the Mayo Clinic, stiff-person syndrome is an autoimmune nervous system condition characterised by “progressive, severe muscle stiffness and spasms of the lower extremities and back.”

“It’s not fair to you to keep postponing the shows, and even though it breaks my heart, it’s best that we cancel everything now until I’m really ready to be back on stage again,” Dion said on Instagram. “I want you to know that I’m not giving up… and I can’t wait to see you!”

Claudette also said that her sister “needs rest.”

“She always goes above all, she always tries to be the greatest, the strongest,” she said. “There comes a point when your small heart and body call to you. Listening is critical.”

When she disclosed her illness, Celine Dion said that stiff-person syndrome “affects something like one in a million people.” Despite the statistics, her loved ones maintain a hopeful attitude. Claudette believes her sister has the will to overcome the disease, saying, “She is disciplined in everything she does in her life.”

“We can’t find medicine,” Claudette said, “but giving hope is important to me.”
