Cade Johnson of the Seattle Seahawks was stretchered off and transported to the hospital with a concussion.

After sustaining a concussion in the team’s preseason opener Thursday night at Lumen Field, Seahawks wide receiver Cade Johnson was carried off the field on a stretcher and transferred to Seattle’s Harborview Medical Centre.

Initial testing, according to head coach Pete Carroll, indicated no abnormalities other than the concussion. He didn’t know whether Johnson would be kept in the hospital overnight.

“We got a really good report — the early one,” Carroll said. “I’m hoping that’s conclusive,” she says, “but that’s what we heard.”

He went on to say that the crew “went to the maximum precautions, and the findings were already really positive.”

Johnson seemed unsteady when getting up after being stopped on a 17-yard kickoff return against the Vikings about four minutes into the second quarter. He walked away on his own and was escorted to the medical tent for assessment.

Johnson remained in the medical tent for the duration of the quarter before being carried onto a stretcher, his neck stabilised, and taken off the field at halftime.

Johnson went undrafted out of South Dakota State in 2021 and spent time on Seattle’s practise squad throughout his first two seasons. Last season, he participated in three regular-season games and had two receptions for 21 yards.

Also on Thursday, Seahawks receiver Dee Eskridge departed the game in the first half after twisting his right knee and did not return. Before serving a six-game ban for breaking the league’s personal conduct rules, he is permitted to practise and participate in preseason games.

“It’s a cartilage thing,” Carroll said of Eskridge’s condition. “We don’t yet know how awful it is. He’s getting the hang of it, so it’s not too bad. It wasn’t disastrous, but we need to determine just how serious it is.”
