Brock Purdy is the ideal Super Bowl underdog.

The Kansas City Chiefs will face the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII. The Chiefs will once again depend on famous quarterback Patrick Mahomes, while the 49ers’ chances rest on relative rookie Brock Purdy.
Originally the butt of countless NFL jokes, Purdy has fought his critics and played his way from the label “Mr. Irrelevant”—earned by the last player taken in each year’s NFL draft—to the championship game.

Purdy was a standout collegiate athlete at Iowa State, earning First-Team All-Big 12 honors twice before signing with the San Francisco 49ers in 2022. Purdy made the 49ers’ roster to begin his rookie season, but as the team’s fourth-string quarterback—most clubs restrict their picks to three—and according to scouting reports, was not expected to have a successful NFL career.
He was scheduled to sit on the bench in 2022, but he ended up playing when Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo had injuries that forced them to miss time on the field. Despite being called “Mr. Irrelevant” as the 262nd and last NFL draft selection in 2022, Purdy quickly changed everyone’s views by leading the 49ers to seven straight victories. He also made history in a 2022 NFC Wild Card game against the Seattle Seahawks, being the first NFL rookie quarterback throw for four touchdowns in a postseason game.
Purdy told the Guardian this week that others may ignore you or believe you aren’t the largest, quickest, or strongest. “But if you believe in yourself and you think that you have what it takes and you truly do believe that and you don’t give up on it, then you can achieve it.”
This season, he received the privilege of starting as the 49ers’ quarterback when Lance was dealt to the Dallas Cowboys and Garappolo signed with the Las Vegas Raiders; he went on to have a fantastic season statistically, tossing the third-most touchdowns of anybody in football.
“Brock’s the real deal,” says 49er head coach Kyle Shanahan. “He knows how to play and we’ve just got to have our team keep getting better and he’ll keep getting better as we go.”
