Birmingham City now has Tom Brady as a minority owner.

Tom Brady, the former quarterback of the New England Patriots, has become a minority owner of Birmingham City, a team in English soccer’s second division Championship.

The seven-time Super Bowl champion quarterback has formed an alliance with Birmingham’s owners, Knighthead Capital Management LLC, and will serve as chairman of the club’s advisory board.

Brady will “apply his extensive leadership experience and expertise across several components of the club,” according to a statement from Birmingham, “including working alongside the sports science department to advise on health, nutrition, wellness, and recovery systems and programmes.”

He retired from the NFL in February 2023, following 23 seasons in which he won seven Super Bowls and was voted MVP five times, establishing himself as one of the best quarterbacks in NFL history.

Brady is the second freshly retired NFL player to take an interest in English football in the past three months, after JJ Watt, who became a minority owner in Premier League club Burnley on May 1.

Brady admits that he still has a lot to learn about English football, but he is excited to add his expertise to the team.

“So here’s the deal: I’m officially joining Birmingham City Football Club,” Brady said. “And perhaps you’re wondering, Tom, what do you know about English football?” Let’s just say I have a lot to learn. But I know a few things about winning, and I believe they will transfer rather well.

“I understand that success begins with hard labour done when no one is looking. I understand that a team is nothing without the support of the community.

“Most significantly, I’m aware that I like being the underdog. Birmingham’s journey has been difficult, but its supporters have never given up hope.

“I’ll see you soon at St Andrew’s.” It’s time to get started.”

Brady will also assist the club with worldwide marketing operations and the identification of new business possibilities.

Since the acquisition was finalised on May 8, the new owners have recruited ex-Manchester City manager Garry Cook as CEO and ex-England manager Hope Powell as women’s technical director. Brady is the most recent acquisition.

“Tom Brady joining the Birmingham City team is a statement of intent,” stated Tom Wagner, chairman of Birmingham’s board. We are establishing a world-class standard. Tom is investing and contributing his time as well as his significant skills. Tom will have a direct effect on the Club as Chair of the Advisory Board.

“The knowledge will benefit the Men’s, Women’s, and Academy teams.” Tom is dedicated to making Birmingham City a renowned leader in nutrition, health, wellbeing, and rehabilitation across the football world.”

“Birmingham City is an iconic club with so much history and passion, and to be a part of the Blues is a real honour for me,” Brady continued. BCFC is founded on collaboration and dedication, and I’m looking forward to working with the board, management, and players to make our Second City club unrivalled.

“I’ve been a part of some incredible teams in my time, and I’m looking forward to bringing that success to Birmingham.”
