Billie Eilish Has Announced Her New Album, “Hit Me Hard and Soft,” After A Long Wait

Billie Eilish hasn’t released a new album in three years, but that wait will end on May 17 with the release of Hit Me Hard and Soft.
Eilish is seen submerged, barefoot, and sinking behind a white wooden door on the record cover. Hit Me Hard and Soft is a unified body of work that should be listened to from beginning to end, according to the release. Eilish said on Instagram, “Not doing singles, I wanna give it to you all at once.” “This album is something that Finneas and I are incredibly proud of, and we can’t wait for you to hear it.”

The announcement follows many days of Eilish teasing new music on Instagram, even going so far as to post mysterious pictures and text to the platform’s close-friends function (which she made public). In one narrative, Eilish had a partial tattoo of the album title, while in another, tidbits of the album artwork were revealed.

Eilish’s third album, Hit Me Hard and Soft, comes after her breakout release in 2019 with When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go and Happier Than Ever in 2021. Eilish said on social media in February that she had perfected the follow-up to Happier Than Ever. She said that she was writing new songs in an interview with The Cookout from back in 2023. “A lot of music is on the way,” she remarked. “A complete album of music is on the horizon. While it’s not quite ready to be released, we’re nearing completion and it’s an exciting time to be involved in the process.
Despite being Eilish’s first full-length album in three years, new music has been released since Happier Than Ever. In 2022, she surprise-released the EP Guitar Songs (which featured the two songs “TV” and “The 30th”). Additionally, she contributed the heartfelt song “What Was I Made For?” to the Barbie soundtrack last year, which went on to become a huge success. The song became the 2024 Grammy Award winner for Song of the Year and the Academy Award winner for Best Original Song, making her the youngest person to win two Oscars in history (she and Finneas first won the Oscar in 2021 for the James Bond theme “No Time to Die”).
On the day of release, Hit Me Hard and Soft will be offered in many vinyl versions, all of which will be composed of recyclable materials and have the identical track listing. Eilish addressed the dearth of sustainable practices in the music business last week in an interview with Billboard. She later emphasized that she wasn’t singling out any one musician.
