Bears general manager Ryan Poles is ‘taking things day by day’ with WR Chase Claypool but wishes him ‘good luck going ahead.’

Chase Claypool looks to be on his way out of the Chicago Bears.

When speaking about the troubled wide receiver on Thursday, Bears general manager Ryan Poles utilised the past tense, wishing Claypool success “moving forward,” according to ESPN’s Courtney Cronin.

The Bears have yet to make a move concerning Claypool, who is still on the roster for the time being. The Bears, according to Poles, are “taking it day by day to figure out what our next move is.”

“I always look at things from a player’s perspective,” Poles added, according to Cronin. “You have a player entering his free agent year who wants to be productive and help us, and when things aren’t going well, you get emotional, things don’t work out, and you struggle to blend in and stay resilient with the rest of the team.” I believe Chase will learn from this circumstance, as will we all, and I wish him the best of success in his future endeavours.”

Claypool, 25, may stay on the roster for the time being, although he has been away from the squad since last week at the organisation’s request. Claypool was inactive against the Denver Broncos on Sunday, and the Bears asked him to remain at home rather than attend the game at Soldier Field. The Bears announced on Monday that Claypool will not travel with the club to the Washington Commanders game on Thursday night, making him inactive for the second week in a row.

Claypool spoke to the media before to the Week 4 game, asking if the Bears’ coaching staff was use him optimally.

The coaching staff has come under scrutiny not just for the team’s 0-4 start, but also for defensive coordinator Alan Williams’ abrupt retirement. On the same day that Williams resigned, quarterback Justin Fields seemed to criticise the coaches’ techniques before explaining his remarks the next day.

Claypool started two of the Bears’ first three games, catching four catches (on 14 targets) for 51 yards and a score.

At last year’s trade deadline, the Bears acquired Claypool from the Steelers in exchange for a second-round selection that ended up becoming the 32nd overall choice in the 2023 NFL Draught. Claypool has 18 receptions (43 targets) for 191 yards in 10 games (five starts) with the Bears.

Claypool, a second-round (49th overall) choice out of Notre Dame in the 2020 NFL Draught, has 171 career catches for 2,235 yards and 13 touchdowns in 49 career games (32 starts), with the majority of his output coming in Pittsburgh. He has two career throwing touchdowns as well as 33 runs for 171 yards and two more scores.
