After years of covert construction, the United States’ newest nuclear stealth bomber is now being unveiled to the public. This is part of the Pentagon’s response to growing concerns about the possibility of a future battle with China.

After a gap of more than three decades, the United States military has finally introduced a brand-new bomber in the form of the B-21 Raider. The government is keeping a tight lid on almost every facet of the programme. Only artistic drawings of the combat aircraft have been made public in advance of its debut on Friday at a base operated by the United States Air Force in Palmdale, California. These few photographs show that the Raider has a striking resemblance to the B-2 Spirit, a stealthy black nuclear bomber that the Raider is intended to someday replace.

The bomber is a part of the Pentagon’s efforts to modernise all three legs of its nuclear triad, which also includes silo-launched nuclear ballistic missiles and submarine-launched warheads. These efforts are being undertaken as the Pentagon shifts its focus from the counterterrorism campaigns of recent decades to the rapid military modernization of China.

According to the annual report on China that was released this week by the Pentagon, China is on track to have 1,500 nuclear weapons by the year 2035, and its gains in hypersonics, cyber warfare, space capabilities, and other areas present “the most consequential and systemic challenge to U.S. national security and the free and open international system.” China is on track to have 1,500 nuclear weapons by the year 2035.

Rollout of the B21 Raider is being broadcast live.
