Angelina Jolie’s incredible fitness feats astounded everyone prior to her departure from the $703 million Tomb Raider franchise.

Angelina Jolie is known for her incredible ability to execute her own stunts, in addition to her irresistible charisma and acting talent. Her incredible athleticism was arguably most visible on the set of Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, when she surprised everyone with her ability to execute triple backflips. Despite her all-out devotion and great performance in the 2001 picture, as well as her subsequent action star stardom with Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Jolie’s participation in the $703 million Tomb Raider trilogy ended abruptly.

Lara Croft: Tomb Raider was a pioneer of video game adaptations in film, with its 2001 release starring Angelina Jolie as the eponymous character. The actor, who was previously renowned for her willingness to do gruelling stunts without a duplicate, stunned her coworkers with her commitment.

“Angelina was performing triple backflips on set and doing bungee jumps from 50 feet up in the air, all with a smile,” director Simon West said. The team was astounded by Jolie’s bravery, especially in high-risk scenarios. “[Jolie is] fearless when it comes to high locations…”Her confidence in heights means you can put her in any perilous situation and know she’ll pull it off convincingly,” West said.

Despite her incredible dedication and charm, Jolie was replaced in the third chapter of the Tomb Raider trilogy by Alicia Vikander. Jolie’s departure from Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001) and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider – The Cradle of Life (2003) stirred questions. Rumours circulated that she opted to leave the series when its popularity decreased, but it was later revealed that the directors and producers no longer felt her as the perfect fit for the part.

“There was never a point in the story that felt right to pass on the baton,” producer Graham King said. The studios inquired about reuniting Angie, which I understand from a marketing standpoint. It just didn’t seem right for our film. Such a move may throw the balance off.”

Alicia Vikander was ultimately chosen as the next Lara Croft, ushering in a new chapter in the $703 million Tomb Raider series. Despite the enthusiasm around Vikander’s debut, fans were left wanting to witness Jolie’s sustained passion and character in the movie.
