'Ahsoka' Episode 7 Recap: Thrawn Nears Victory

‘Ahsoka’ Episode 7 Recap: Thrawn Nears Victory

Ahsoka has officially reached its final point with Episode 7, dubbed “Dreams and Madness,” however the tale seems far from finished by next week. After an episode-long break, Ahsoka (Rosario Dawson) returns to the main narrative, riding the Purrgil Express into a brand-new galaxy of turmoil with her loyal friend Huyang (David Tennant). As they go off into the unknown, Ahsoka visits her former instructor Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen), who graciously left her twenty training holograms before succumbing to the Dark Side. Despite her reincarnation, Ahsoka seems to be stuck in the past.

The episode begins in a more familiar galaxy, with Hera Syndulla (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) facing the consequences of her actions before a panel of sceptical and downright condescending senators who dismiss her reports on Morgan Elsbeth (Diana Lee Inosanto) and Thrawn (Lars Mikkelsen). C-3PO (Anthony Daniels) comes at the eleventh hour with an urgent message from Senator Leia Organa, who reportedly authorised Hera’s mission. While Hera avoids being court-martialed for her conduct, Chancellor Mothma (Genevieve O’Reilly) quickly suspects that Senator Organa was unaware of the plan until they required her help rescuing Hera. Mon Mothma is the sole senator who sees Thrawn as a genuine threat—one that should be taken seriously. While Senator Organa’s participation felt like a ruse to play on still-tender emotions, it was a pleasure that Dave Filoni chose to just name her rather than recreate her using CGI to add another ghastly uncanny valley Skywalker to the club.

When the Purrgils eventually make the journey to a galaxy far, far away, Ahsoka and Huyang find themselves in the heart of a gigantic Imperial minefield put up to prevent her arrival. While Ahsoka is no SkyGuy, she deftly navigates their spacecraft through a series of exploding mines that resembles a level from the early-aughts computer game Star Wars: Jedi Starfighter. With Ahsoka’s appearance showing that she escaped death, Morgan provides Thrawn with her Jedi findings, as he asked in last week’s episode. Thrawn is pleasantly delighted that Anakin Skywalker is her Master, a Jedi with whom he had formed an odd alliance in Star Wars: The Clone Wars — and, of course, he is one of the few individuals who knows Anakin Skywalker is Darth Vader. So it’s really humorous that he didn’t previously know this vital piece of information, albeit novices to Ahsoka were probably similarly perplexed by Anakin having a Padawan.

Thrawn, being the consummate strategist that he is, recognises that Ahsoka’s primary priority would be finding Sabine, and he conveniently knows where she is. Baylan (Ray Stevenson) orders Shin (Ivanna Sakhno) to murder Ezra and Sabine since her path is one of ambition and his is not. He suggests that he plans to break ways with her, but he leaves her with insightful advice about how waiting for a triumph would always result in failure. This bit of advise may have been useful for the scriptwriting process, since Ahsoka has been chasing victory with zeal.
